Manchester United reportedly watched Benfica’s Ruben Dias in pre-season action earlier this week, and are now said to be in talks to sign him.
United are in the market for a centre-back, with Harry Maguire of Leicester believed to be a target. But the Foxes are said to be holding out for a world record fee for a defender if they are to sell Maguire.
That has seen Dias emerge as a possible alternative, and Portuguese outlet Correio de Manha, cited by Sport Witness, claim United are ‘advancing’ on the defender having watched him in pre-season for Benfica earlier this week.
Dias, 22, has a release clause of €66million and Benfica reportedly would not be willing to sell him for anything lower than that amount.
This is not the first time United have been linked with Dias, having been briefly connected with the Portugal international last summer.
Meanwhile, United have rejected Inter Milan’s opening offer for Romelu Lukaku, reports say.
United and Inter began official talks over the sale of the Belgian striker on Thursday, and The Guardian say United rejected Inter’s £62.9million offer.
Previous reports had suggested Inter had offered United £9m for a two-year loan deal with the compulsory fee of £53m to make the move permanent at the end of the spell.
But now the Guardian say Inter’s first bid is a similar amount but provided upfront and with no loan included.
However, the report says United are holding out for a fee of £75m – the same amount they paid Everton in 2017.
MEN Sport understand that no formal offer has been made, an United are in fact looking to make a profit on Lukaku, as Everton are due £5m of any transfer.
