Manchester United fans issue Chris Smalling demand after Roma form – Manchester Evening News

Many Manchester United fans believe Chris Smalling deserves another chance at the club after an impressive run of form while on-loan at Roma.

The 30-year-old centre back joined Roma on a temporary basis in the summer transfer window after he was told game time would be limited under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at United.

Smalling has rejuvenated his career while playing in Italy and has already established himself as a key figure in Rome under the guidance of Paulo Fonseca.

Since overcoming injury Smalling has played every minute of 11 Serie A matches this season and has contributed heavily to the run of form which sees Roma in fourth-place.

MEN Sport ran a poll on Monday afternoon in which fans were asked whether or not Smalling deserves another chance at Old Trafford once his loan spell comes to an end.

59 per cent of supporters backed Smalling to get another opportunity at the club, with 31 per cent of those also suggesting he was good enough to start.

The remaining 41 per cent voted for the club to cash in and sell the in-form centre back instead.

Replying to the poll one supporter suggested he was better than many options already at the club, but still not good enough for Old Trafford. “He is better than Jones, Lindelof and Rojo but he is still not good enough for Man Utd.”

While another supporter suggested the Roma coaching staff are in fact the ones who deserve praise. “If after nearly 10 years of inconsistency at the club he’s suddenly good enough to start, we shouldn’t be just bringing him back. We should ask the coaching staff at Roma to come with him.”
