Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham

Marcus Rashford’s brace ruined Jose Mourinho’s Old Trafford return as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United ran out deserved victors against Tottenham.

Less than a year after being sacked as background backbiting compounded poor performances, Mourinho returned to the Old Trafford touchline at a time when pressure was increasing on his successor following the club’s worst start to a season since 1988.

The Portuguese received a warm reception at his old stomping ground but Solskjaer’s name filled the air, when Rashford goals either side of a fine Dele Alli equaliser sealed United a much-needed 2-1 victory against Spurs.

The end of Mourinho’s three-game winning start to life at the Tottenham helm provided a timely shot in the arm for his former club, with a trip to reigning champions and bitter rivals Manchester City coming on Saturday evening.

Jadon Sancho preference

Jadon Sancho would prefer to join Liverpool over Manchester United, claims ESPN reporter Mark Ogden.

However, Ogden says Arsenal are also interested in Sancho and Manchester City would welcome him back to the Etihad.

“I don’t think it will happen in January,” Ogden told ESPN FC. “It doesn’t really stack up for Sancho if he’s not happy at Dortmund, he’s not playing games and he goes to Anfield in January – when’s he going to play?

“You’ve got Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Mo Salah, I don’t think he gets in ahead of those three.

“There is a bit of a market, bit of a chase hotting up for Sancho. Man United are keen but obviously I think Liverpool would be a more favourable option for him than United at the moment.”

Solskjaer speaks…

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “We’ve got a couple of injuries. Scott McTominay is back and fit to play. It was an easy decision to get him in. Jesse Lingard has been really good in the last few weeks from the bench so we give him a chance.

“Ashley Young is very important, our club captain. He’s got experience and is vocal in the dressing room. He’s one of our leaders. It’s important to have experience in the big games.

“We’ve got exciting forwards, hopefully we can create chances for them. I’ve been waiting to see Mason Greenwood in the Premier League – it’s a big stage against a big team but I’m sure he’s ready.”

Asked about going toe-to-toe with Jose Mourinho, Solskjaer added: “It’s a normal game. He’s not on the pitch, neither am I.”

January transfer hint

Manchester United coach Mike Phelan’s comments about a superstar signing will no doubt intrigue fans.

The Red Devils had a solid, but unspectacular, summer when they sealed transfers for Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire.

But Phelan has today insisted that United remain keen on the big names that football has to offer.

“I think there has got to be a blend,” Phelan told the Evening Standard when grilled on the club’s transfer policy. “I think Manchester United still do want superstars, but I think they still want to see them coming through and progressing and being part of something special.”

Wanted: Dejan Kulusevski

Manchester United have submitted a bid for Atalanta winger Dejan Kulusevski.

That’s according to reports in Italy, who claim the Red Devils have already offered £21million for the Sweden international.

Kulusevski, who is currently on loan at Parma, is being tracked by a number of European clubs including Liverpool, Juventus and Arsenal.

However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are reported to have acted first with a £21m bid – which is still short of Atalanta’s £30m valuation.

Jadon Sancho to Chelsea

Chelsea are confident of winning the battle to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

That’s according to Goal, who claim Frank Lampard’s side are prepared to shatter their transfer record to secure his services either in January or next summer.

Chelsea’s current transfer record stands at £72million paid for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao.

But Goal claim Chelsea executives will green-light a bid that could potentially dwarf the £89m Barcelona paid Dortmund for Ousmane Dembele in 2017.

Sancho, 19, is reported to be unhappy at the Westfalenstadion with Liverpool, Barcelona and Manchester United also competing for his signature.

Memphis Depay plan

Lyon plan to offer Memphis Depay a new contract amid plenty of interest from Premier League clubs for the Dutch star.

Depay struggled previously in England at Manchester United but the Red Devils, Liverpool and Tottenham have all been linked with the winger.

However Lyon president Jean Michel Aulas has revealed that the Ligue 1 club plan to offer their player a new deal, though he knows it will be down to Depay to decide his future.

“We will make him a contract extension offer because he is an exceptional player,” Aulas told BeIN Sports. “He will be the one who will ultimately decide. He is a sweet boy, an interesting man.”

Wilfried Zaha bid

Chelsea are looking to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.

The Ivory Coast international was expected to leave for Arsenal or Everton during the summer transfer window – but neither would meet his £70million valuation.

Now, The Telegraph claim Frank Lampard’s side are looking to bring him to Stamford Bridge next summer.

The Blues are currently under a two-window transfer ban after Fifa found them guilty of breaking transfer regulations – but Chelsea are hopeful their recent appeal with be successful.

Paul Pogba’s a disgrace – Brazil

Paul Pogba must never play for Manchester United again, claims former Red Devils striker Alan Brazil.

Pogba has not featured for United since the 1-1 Premier League draw with Arsenal in September.

The France international, who Brazil branded a “disgrace”, has been hampered by a foot injury and has spent a lot of time abroad.

“I go back to Pogba, [Solskjaer’s] saying that when he comes back he’ll be like a new signing,” Brazil said on talkSPORT. “Well, I wouldn’t want him back, what is he doing in Miami? No chance [would I have Pogba back], I’d say stay there.

“He’s a disgrace. How can you rely on someone like him? [He’s been] at a pop concert, at a basketball court with his kid.

“Why is he not having treatment? Why is he not here seeing the specialists and getting ready to come back and help Manchester United? The fans have had enough of him.”
