Ole Gunnar Solskjaer referenced comedy classic Dumb and Dumber when asked about Paul Pogba’s chances of being fit for the Manchester derby.
Pogba is still unavailable due to an ankle injury as United prepare to host Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night before they travel to the Etihad on Saturday.
The United midfielder has played just six times all season after sustaining an ankle injury in the 1-1 draw with Southampton on August 31 and Pogba has not featured since the stalemate with Arsenal on September 30.
As Solskjaer emerged from his seat at the end of his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, he was asked whether Pogba could recover in time for trip to City at the weekend.
“There’s always a chance, if you’ve seen Dumb and Dumber,” Solskjaer replied.
In the 1994 Farrelly brothers comedy, Jim Carrey’s besotted Lloyd Christmas asks Mary (Lauren Holly): “What do you think the chances are of a girl like you and a guy like me ending up together?” He is eventually told they are ‘like one out of a million’.
Lloyd originally appears crestfallen until he breaks into an optimistic smile and replies: “So you’re telling me there’s a chance!”
Solskjaer previously referred to the scene while Molde coach and was asked about Danish minnows Midtjylland’s chances of beating United in the Europa League in 2016.
“There’s maybe a one or two percent chance, but there is a chance. That’s the thing,” Solskjaer told the Midtjylland’s YouTube channel. “If you’ve seen Dumb and Dumber, the movie, he says: ‘There’s one in a million.’ He looks at it in a positive way – ‘There is a chance, you’re telling me that there is a chance’.
“I think you’ve got to go in with that belief, that maybe this is that miraculous day.”
