Anthony Martial sets himself fresh Manchester United challenge – Manchester Evening News

Anthony Martial says he must prove himself as ‘one of the best strikers’ in the Premier League this season.

The French forward hit the ground running at Old Trafford following his move from Monaco in 2015 but is yet to have netted more than the 17 goals he managed in his debut season.

Injury has hampered Martial’s progress at United while the 23-year-old has also struggled for a regular starting spot under the different managers he has worked with.

Martial is once again a central figure under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he is now looking to establish himself as the first-choice under the Norwegian.

“When I arrived at the club, I was just a young player,” Martial told United Review.

“I still hadn’t had the benefit of a proper full season as a professional first-team player in my legs. But now it’s my fifth season here, so now I have to prove and to show that I have evolved as a player and blossomed into one of the best strikers in the Premier League. When I came here I was still just a kid, and now I’ve grown up and I’ve become a lot more mature. Nowadays, I feel so much better in myself.”

Martial will be hoping to get back on the score-sheet when United face Tottenham in the Premier League on Wednesday night, and the French forward admits he is surprised to see Jose Mourinho’s side as low as fifth in the table.

He added: “Yes, I have been surprised because they had a good season last time around and managed to make it to the Champions League final, so I was expecting them to be doing better.

“But I’m sure they will manage to bounce back and climb up the table. I have no doubts that they will because they have a good side with some great players.”
